8 Basic Strokes

  1. Waang4 橫 (horizontal - left to right): 一
It is divided into long straight horizontal strokes and short straight horizontal strokes. For example, "one" 一 (one long horizontal stroke). "two"二 (one  long horizontal stoke with 1 short horizontal stroke).
If more than 1 horizontal stoke in a character, the distance between the two horizontal lines should be equal.

  2. Zik6 直 (vertical - top to down): 丨
It is divided into long straight vertical strokes and short straight vertical strokes. For example, the character "中" has one long straight stroke, while the character "工" has one short straight stroke.
Make sure when writing vertical strokes, they must be drawn from top to bottom, be vertical, and not slanted.

  3. Pit3 撇 (left-falling ): 丿

When writing the left-falling stroke, start from the top right and falling to the bottom left, paying attention to the appropriate length, angle, and curvature.
    Ping4 Pit3 (Flat):
    千
    Dyun2 Pit3 (Short): 星
    Coeng4 Pit3 (Long): 刀
    Waan1 Pit3 (Curve): 文
    Zik6 Pit3 (Straight): 月

  4. Naat6 捺 (right-falling): ㇏
Right-falling stroke is divided into slanting right-falling strokes and flat right-falling strokes. The strokes with a greater slant are called slanting right-falling strokes, while those with a smaller slant are called flat right-falling strokes.
When writing a right-falling stroke, it should be drawn from the upper left slanting down to the lower right, paying attention to the appropriate slant angle and length.
    Ce4 Naat6 (Slanting right-falling strokes):
    天
    Ping4 Naat6 (Flat right-falling strokes): 道

  5. Tik1 趯 (raising): ㇀
Raising stroke is divided into slanting raising and flat raising. A raising stroke with a large slant is called slanting raising and is mostly found on the left side of a character; a raising stroke with a small slant is called flat raising and is mostly found at the bottom of a character.
When writing a press stroke, it should be go from the bottom left to the top right, paying attention to the appropriate angle and length.
    Ce4 Tik1 (Slanting raising):
    把
    Ping4 Tik1 (Flat raising): 地

  6. Dim2 點 (dot): 、
Dot is divided into left dot, right dot, upward dot and downward dot.
The left dot is made by a stroke slanting from the top right to the bottom left.
The right dot is made by a stroke slanting from the top left to the bottom right.
The upward dot first slants from the top left to the bottom right, then flicks upwards to the top right.
The downward dot is made by a stroke from the top left to the bottom right, but its direction towards the bottom right is slightly straighter than that of the right dot.
    Zo2 Deon6 Dim2 (Left dot) and Jau6 Deon6 Dim2 (Right dot):
    小
    Fu2 Dim2 (Downward dot) and Joeng2 Dim2 (Upward dot): 冫

  7. Waan1 彎 (curved):
Curved is divided into left bend, right bend, upper bend and left flexion.
The left bend - first curves downwards to the right and then bends to the left.
The right bend - curves from the upper left to the lower right.
The upper bend - curves from the upper left downwards to the right and then bends upwards to the right.

    Zo2 Fong1 Waan1 (Left bend):
    了
    Jau6 Fong1 Waan1 (Right bend): 戈
    Soeng6 Fong1 Waan1 (Upper bend): 心
    Zo2 Wat1 Kuk1 (Left flexion): 乙

A hook attached to the end of a vertical stroke is called a vertical hook, one attached to the end of a horizontal stroke is called a horizontal hook, and one attached to the end of a curved stroke is called a curved hook. The curved hook in the character "
心" (heart) is also called a lying hook, while the curved hook in the character "我" (I/me) is called a slanting hook.
